Cathy Guisewite

"Every time I get something under control in my own life, the world provides more material. The skimpy lingerie revolution--the gourmet giant chocolate chip muffin revolution--the 1,200-calorie "low-fat" Chinese chicken salad--the "leather hot pants for the new 21st Century, no-nonsense businesswoman--the 25,000-acre warehouse of electronics without one human who knows anything about any of them except, sometimes, how to ring one up--the nine pairs of sneakers I now have to own and pack to make sure I always have the appropriate athletic shoe for the workout programs I've been pledging to start for the last 10 years?"

Ian Curtis

I wish I were a Warhol silk screen
Hanging on the wall

Or little Joe or maybe Lou

I'd love to be them all

All New York city's broken hearts

And secrets would be mine

I'd put you on a movie reel

And that would be just fine

Bangkok Dangerous

I saw Bangkok Dangerous in theaters during my trip to Thailand to see my family about nine years ago. I have been a fan of the Pang Brothers ever since then. Now the American version starring Nicolas Cage will have its release this year. I really enjoyed the American adaptation of the Oxide Pang movie, The Eye. I thought they did a good job translating the story. I am quite curious as to how this version of Bangkok Dangerous will fare up to the original Thai one.

P. Williams Performance @ HBAC

This is the performance that P. Williams did during the opening reception of Ground Us at the Huntington Beach Art Center. Pat finally has a rough cut on YouTube. I totally missed tit. I came right at the tale end. From what I understand, Ed Giardina totally was recruited into helping out.

Let me know if you can spot what this ad is actually for. It's so bad, it's kind of brilliant.

Occupancy By More Than 735 Person Is Dangerous And Unlawful

Punk Island

I don't really like punk music all that much. I've notice lately that all the music I've been listening to have been on the mellow side lately. But then again, every time I go see one of the bands I listen to, they always totally rock out. And I quite like that. Don't get me wrong. I do like listening to punk music from time to time. It's not like it's reggae. I can't stand reggae. Bob Marley seems to be the only exception for me on that front.

But I really don't usually go to punk shows all that much. I just think everyone in that scene aren't really my kind of people. Not to say that they aren't cool. I mean my little cousin was a punk rocker/ skaterboy when he was a teen. And I know quite a bit of ex-punk rockers. So I know the people are cool. I'm just not into it as much as they are.

When I was on Governor's Island during my New York trip the city turned the entire island into Punk Island. They had several punk bands come onto the place and do free performances all over. It was nice to see. I was able to capture a couple bands while I was on my way out.

Not Exactly Mountain @ The Proposition

Believe it. folks. I am still playing catch up with all my stuff from New York. This was up at The Proposition in Chelsea. Tim Evans and Mike Park was in the show Intersections that I helped curate for the Cypress College Art Gallery in the spring. When I met up with them up in San Francisco before the show, they were telling me about their plans for this particular show. One of them was a 3-d animation in collaboration with their friend Jason Smith. It was shown in the project space when the show was up.

I really like Tim's new work. Watercolors are a departure from the work I have seen from him so far. It is funny how you pick up on all the references he put into his paintings.

I also think that Mike Park is a really good painter. I had only three pieces of his in Intersections, but seeing these many in one show really give me a respect for him. The photos do not do the painting justice. They are so well crafted.

The show came down June 28th, so I really cannot point you to the gallery to go see it in person anymore. But I am glad that I was in New York at the same time with the show, so that I could have seen it in person.

Bunny Gunner One Year Anniversary Show

Both Finishing School and I will each have a piece in this show. It is just a fun show. Bunnies and guns. And we are happy to be in it. Particularly to show support for Susie and Juan.

I was out there today all day helping them out with the installation. With a total of around 120 works and 80 artists, I am sure you will find something you like there. The opening is tomorrow night 6-10 p.m. But truthfully I have been told that it will probably run up until four in the morning.

They will have a live performance, as well as barbeque on site. All courtesy of Santa Ana staple Grace and Morey. I was not around in the scene back then, but from what I hear, they do some mean cooking.

So if you are curious about what it is all about, head out to Pomona tomorrow night for their Second Saturday Art Walk and check out the show.

Emergence

I am slowly trying to post all the things I have from the New York trip. These are images from the Emergence show that Finishing School was in. As you know from previous posts, I had to do a performance for the show on Governor's Island. I thought the show was actually well curated, with good work all throughout. Below I have an alternate documentation of the performance that I have not previously posted here.

Finishing School on Make Blog

I think I speak for everyone in Finishing School when I say that we simply adore Make Magazine. We are especially happy that one of our Public Interaction Objects (PIO), Meet/ Greet was featured on their blog the other day. The article was short, but it was definitely sweet.

Olafur Eliasson

I was able to catch the tail end of Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson over at MOMA while I was in New York. This is the second time I have seen the retrospective. The first was during my trip to San Francisco, at SFMOMA. Eliasson currently has three waterfall structures up all around the Manhattan area. I was there about a week too early because they were not going to turn on the water until the week following. One of the structures was in front of Governor's Island where I had to do the Finsishing School performance, Today It's Voluntary. There are currently videos of the waterfalls floating out on the Internet. The OC Art Blog recently posted one up. Head over there to view it.
