The Revolution Renamed

The first thing that comes to mind is whether the new name for the Nintendo Revolution (Wii) will be embraced by gamers and the general public, or will it be ridiculed to the end of time. There have been some very interesting naming conventions that came out of Japan in the past several years, but this begs a collective question of what are the people at Nintendo thinking. The reasons given for the new name of the Revolution reminds me of artists who comes up with academic explanations of their artwork without any being there in the first place. One has to really wonder if anyone will find this silly rename as revolutionary as Nintendo has been painting the Revolution. In Nintendo's words: "Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other." To me, it is all a bit of a stretch.

Chernobyl

I was a bit too young when the incident happened, but that didn't stop the event to find its way into my knowledge as I was growing up. Nightline had a segment that mentioned how the fallout from the disaster went all the way to England, with the worse being in Belarus.

One of my favorite blogs, Antipixel, had a post pointing to a slideshow of Paul Fusco's photographs of Chernobyl. The most disturbing image is probably the deformed legs of a young child. It makes one wonder how we can continue to harness a power that is so destructive and, in a way, still uncontrollable. More and more countries want to become a Nuclear Power, to be in the league with the most powerful. If one incident can spread its effects in such wide a net, it is unimaginable what our worse fears will produce.
